“In the world of equestrian facilities, fencing is never just a boundary. It is a vital investment in safety, animal welfare and the functionality of an equestrian estate,” said Matt Cooper from East Kent Yard and Paddock Maintenance.

With over 5 years of hands-on experience and a portfolio of projects spanning the South East, Matt is renowned for his ability to transform even the most complex equestrian properties into safe, functional and aesthetically striking spaces.

When plans for a prestigious new equestrian facility in Jersey, Channel Islands, began to take shape, the client turned to Matt expertise to bring their vision to life. McVeigh Parker—the UK’s leading name in fencing innovation and supply—were chosen as the principal suppliers, providing the trusted partnership and logistical support needed to deliver such an ambitious undertaking from start to finish.

Planning with welfare in mind

The Jersey project was not simply about fencing; it was about creating a system that prioritised equine welfare. Over a period of 16 months, Matt worked closely with the client to design a layout that combined functionality with a deep understanding of the horses’ natural behaviour and needs.

“The client reached out to us through our association with Graveney Track Livery and from seeing a number of the projects we have completed relating to the Track method of looking after horses,” Matt explained. “A Track System for horses helps to encourage movement and a more natural way for horses to live in herds. Sometimes the tracks are surfaced, sometimes not, but food is provided at various places on the track. Feeding this way over just turning out on lush green grass can help horses that have various dietary and hoof conditions.

For a non-horsey person, just think about controlling diabetes and weight via diet. The one thing all equestrian systems need is good fencing and as always, we are keen to deliver the most appropriate fencing first time and to ensure the client gets the best possible return on their investment.”

Matt emphasised the importance of premium materials in delivering a world-class finish:

“Materials selection is important, so we used the DURA² posts and rails, which come with a 20-year warranty, providing long-term value and peace of mind for property owners investing in their facilities.

The project chose to use Xfence premium wire netting XHT12-110-7.5. The unique strong unobtrusive Xknot not only provides an excellent joint, but it’s smooth surface also provides a safe environment for the horses. GallagherTurboline electric rope and insulators were also installed for various elements of the electric fencing system.

McVeigh Parker fought through a number of supply chain challenges to get everything to the docks for us, ready for it to be shipped and make its way to site for the first days of knocking.”

Precision, hard work and craftsmanship

When it came to execution, Matt travelled to Jersey solo, towing his trusty RG30 post knocker and dedicating more than 20 intensive days to the installation. The project spanned two sites and required over 1,600 metres of fencing and 21 gates.

Every detail was meticulously planned. Over 250 metres of tensioned wire were installed alongside two-rail fencing, complemented by IAE’s four-bar, fully meshed gates for enhanced safety and versatility. Six-rail heavy bottom rail wooden gates were chosen for key access points, while a bespoke hardwood heavy bottom rail gate provided a refined touch at the main entrance. Heavy-duty welded mesh gate wings were also fitted for long-term durability. In addition, Matt installed posts for electric fencing and created corral and tie-up areas, ensuring the facilities were both practical and visually striking.

A standout installation

The client is over the moon with the finished work,” Matt said. “There is very little high tensile wire fencing in the island, so this really stands out. It’s not over—we will be back out there once a barn has been constructed to assist in the final fit-out and tying it into the fencing plan, and I’m sure there will be more to come from the leads we have already received from the island.”

For McVeigh Parker, the Jersey project underlined the company’s reputation as a trusted partner you can rely on in the UK and beyond.

“This project showcases the standards we uphold at McVeigh Parker,” said Chris Hambridge, CEO of McVeigh Parker. “Our commitment is to provide customers with industry-leading materials, supported by the logistical and technical expertise required to deliver projects of any scale and location.”
