Job description : Network Rail needed a long-life alternative rail side livestock fencing. McVeigh Parker were approached to supply and assist local line-side engineers and regional fencing contractors to install 800m of the Triple X Cattle/Railway fencing system, which included the unique Clipex quick clip posts, all steel strainers and X knot stiff stay wire netting.

The specification was initially designed by Network Rail to be a multipurpose fence that could answer most rail side issues. The overall fence height was 1.35m high including one top high tensile barbed wire.

This particular project used standard Clipex posts at 4.5m ctrs, with a Beefy (larger profile post with 60% greater holding) every 4th post.

The strainer post were installed by using a tracked machine post knocker, but can equally be augured using a manual petrol post hole auger, then finished off with a manual petrol post driver, if a machine knocker is not available or access is restricted.

The strut was then fitted with ease and the tension wire and joiner added, a process that can be achieved in less then five minutes. Once the strainers had been installed, unlike standard practice the wire was installed next, first installing a base line which acts as your fence guideline. Then the netting was installed tying off on the strainers and joining in the middle using gripple wire joiners or clamp bars and chain tensioners.

Once the wire had been tensioned to about 50% of the tension curve in the wire, Beefy’s are installed first. The Beefy's are strategically installed at peaks and troughs or very slight changes in direction along the fence line. Then the intermediates were then installed at the centre of the vertical wires in the netting. The netting was held away while the inters were driven to a depth 25mm above the strengthening plate, then the wire was simply clipped into place by pushing in and down. This was repeated along the fence line. The barbed wire was then unrolled tensioned slightly then clipped into position.
