A high-performance alternative to traditional timber strainers
Tornado’s Pro-Strain® system is an advanced steel straining solution engineered to outperform conventional wooden strainers. Developed in collaboration with leading UK agricultural fencing contractors.
Pro-Strain’s registered designs eliminate the drawbacks of timber, including short service life and reliance on chemical treatments, while providing a robust galvanised steel structure that stands up to challenging ground conditions and long-term use.
Why Pro-Strain
Six structural advantages that make Pro-Strain the working contractor’s default for steel strainers.
Adapts to varied terrain
Handles uneven topography and a wide range of ground conditions without redesign.
Lightweight components
Easier transport and installation, especially on difficult-access sites.
Fast, simple install
Minimal tools required, no chainsaws needed.
Manual or machine drive
Straining posts and pegs go in by hand or post knocker.
Adjustable, pre-loadable
Full pre-loading minimises movement when the fence is tensioned.
Compatible with all intermediates
Works with steel and timber intermediate posts.
Strainers and Struts
Manufactured from heavy-duty galvanised steel tube, Pro-Strain straining posts and strut pegs deliver exceptional strength and durability. Each post includes bolted heel and breast plates, with standard, extra-large or plate-free options depending on ground conditions.
Struts connect to the post and peg using an adjustable brace, or can be configured as a box brace linking two strainers, providing a stable, adaptable solution across varied terrain.
Pro-Strain component specifications
Galvanised steel throughout, drilled and dimensioned for repeatable, professional install.
| Component | Material & dimensions | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Straining / turning post | 89mm × 3mm OD galvanised steel tube | Pre-drilled 13.5mm holes for heel/breast plates and a 12mm hole for the strut coupler. Flexible install tailored to soil type and load. |
| Strut | 48mm × 3.2mm OD galvanised steel tube | Engineered for long-term strength and stability. |
| Strut peg | 89mm × 3mm galvanised steel tube, 1m length | Pre-drilled 13.5mm and 12mm holes for plate and coupler attachment. |
| Couplers and adjuster | Two-part coupler system | Large coupler connects strut to peg; small coupler fits the adjustable brace and locks into the straining post; adjuster pre-loads the system before tensioning. |
| Heel and breast plates | 250 × 250 × 4mm galvanised steel, M12 × 110mm bolts | Heel plate: rear lower holes. Breast plate: front upper holes. Additional breast plate at front of strut peg. Soft ground: 350 × 250 × 4mm option for more surface area. |
Shear-by-design. Bolts are designed to shear if they hit immovable underground obstacles. In chalky ground, omit the heel plate to avoid interference while retaining the breast plate to prevent rotation.
